Student ContestsJWU hosts a recipe contest for all secondary school students. We are currently taking entries for the National High School Chef of the Year. If a high school junior or senior becomes a finalist, he/she will compete at JWU's North Miami campus for University tuition scholarship dollars, a personal meeting with alum Tyler Florence, and an autographed copy of Tyler Florence's "Eat This Book." As an educator, you'll receive all the accolades that come with making your student a star and even a trip to the campus, too. If a freshman or sophomore becomes a finalist, he/she will receive a tuition scholarship/grant, a Career Explorations® program and may be eligible to have a JWU chef perform a culinary demonstration at his/her school.
So pass this information along to your students, and encourage them to enter. You never know who could become the next Tyler Florence! If you are an Educator and would like to incorporate the J&W High School Chef of the Year into your classroom, contact us for a complete contest organizer. This is a great project for a term and great experience for each of the students is derived from the process. Below is a testimonial from one of our educators who annually completes this project with her Culinary/Foods Class: "The Johnson and Wales National High Chef of the Year contest has been an assignment for my students for the past 7 years. The project is one of my required homework assignments for 1st semester. With only a limited number of students able to compete in Pro Start and SKILLS USA competitions, this contest gives my students another opportunity to show off their talents. The contest pulls together everything that has been done in class into a project that takes the classroom learning into a realistic application. Each student incorporates learned math, science and English skills into this assignment. I require that each student not only follow the directions of the contest, but also turn in a cost analysis, nutritional breakdown and a one page essay as to the biggest problem that they encountered and how it was solved."
