PBS' "Cooking Under Fire" Filmed at North Miami Campus

Johnson & Wales University’s North Miami Campus was featured on two episodes of Cooking Under Fire, a new show that debuted on the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) this spring. The documentary-style reality series tracked 12 contestants — including recent Johnson & Wales alumnus Matthew Leeper ’03 — as they embarked on a coast-to-coast cooking competition in four of the nation's culinary capitals — Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami and New York. The final show culminated with one skilled individual winning the job of chef at one of famed chef and restaurateur Todd English's restaurants in New York City.

Johnson & Wales is the only academic institution featured in the series; two of the 12 episodes were filmed at J&W's North Miami Campus and aired on Wed., June 1 and Wed., June 22, at 8:30 p.m. (Check your local listings for repeat airings) Two Johnson & Wales alumni well known in the Miami area served as guest judges in these episodes: Michelle Bernstein ’94 (formerly of Azul) and Frank Randazzo ’92 (Talula).

Each of the competition cities offered an impressive panel of local guest chef judges including David Myers of Sona (Los Angeles), Michael Mina of Mina's (Las Vegas and San Francisco), Norman Van Aken of Norman's (Miami, Orlando and Los Angeles), and Marcus Samuelsson of Aquavit (New York). The overall judges included chefs and restaurateurs Ming Tsai and Todd English, and author and trained chef Michael Ruhlman (The Soul of a Chef, The Making of a Chef).
