The Warning Signs of AnorexiaBy: Erica Boshnack
Within the United States, about eight million people are battling eating disorders, and only 60% will completely recover. Anorexia, one of the most plaguing eating disorders, affects primarily female adolescents. About 5 to 10% of anorexics are, however, male and it has been found in people as young as 10 and as old as 70. The real question is...What are the warning signs? Anorexia is very prevalent in dancers, models, professional athletes, and actors and actresses. Anorexia can also be an unhealthy response to sexual abuse, family problems, early experiences of improper feeding, a very strict and controlled home life, as well as stress. Signs of Anorexia are low blood pressure, very poor self image, dull or brittle hair, dental problems, dehydration, and lack of normal menstruation (also known as Amenorrhea), growth of unusual body hair, abdominal pain, constipation, and mostly a great loss in body weight. Most people suffering from anorexia tend to be in denial that anything is wrong with them, so be sure to approach them in a gentle manor. If someone you know seems to be suffering from anorexia or any other eating disorder, the first thing that you should do is call a doctor, hospital, or mental health clinic. Ask for advice on how to approach this person, and get them medical help as soon as possible. Anorexia can be a fatal and damaging disease and requires professional care. Back to the Front Page |
