2006 National Recipe ContestOn February 18, 2006, finalists chosen from more than 500 entries competed in J&W's National High School Recipe Contest, held at the Charlotte Campus.
The grand-prize winners in the dinner and dessert categories were awarded full-tuition scholarships for 4 years (worth $80,000), as well as a backstage tour of the TV Food Network and a private cooking lesson with celebrity chef, author, and J&W grad Tyler Florence. The first runners up in each category were awarded $7,500 renewable scholarships (worth $30,000), and the second runners up in each category were awarded $5,000 renewable scholarships (worth $20,000). The remaining finalists each received $3,500 renewable scholarships worth $14,000. After much deliberation on the basis of taste, presentation and appearance, and originality and creativity, the judges selected the following winners: DINNER CATEGORY Grand prize: Jack Hogan of Portsmouth, N.H. - Pan-Roasted Duck Breast, Butternut Squash Risotto, and Maple-Roasted Squash Puree First runner-up: Kevin McCort of Warminster, Pa. - Citrus Tea-Rubbed Tenderloin of Turkey with Orange Cranberry Compote Second runner-up: Daniel Vaughan of Union, W.V. - Pan-Roasted Mountain Quail with Mushroom Stuffing DESSERT CATEGORY Grand prize: Angelica DeRobles of San Jose, Calif. - Chocolate Lava Tamale de el Chichon First runner-up: Ashley Hankison of Gainesville, Fla. - Florida Strawberry Teardrop Delight Second runner-up: Erica Franklin of Bensalem, Pa. - Fruity Tutti Frozen Soy Cream on Oatmeal Lace |
