Tyler Florence '94, '04 HDR

Tyler Florence '94 has become a household name in the culinary industry by creating a jet-setting culinary career as a television star, cookbook author, radio host and tabletop designer. After graduating from J&W, Tyler moved to New York City and and worked with such chefs as Charlie Palmer at Aureole, Marta Pulini at Mad 61 and Rick Laakonen at River Cafe.        
 
He moved on to become executive chef at the acclaimed Cibo, and then opened the celebrated celebrity hang-out Cafeteria as executive chef. But his fast-moving career was only just beginning.
 
Tyler’s accessible demeanor, tireless work ethic and culinary flair have earned him popular programs on the Food Network including “Tyler’s Ultimate,” “Food 911” and “How to Boil Water.” These shows are on the air in such far flung countries as the Philippines and Australia. Tyler's also been host of the popular WOR radio show "Food Talk" which reached audiences from the mid-Atlantic states up to New England.
 
Following the rave reviews and huge success of his second cookbook "Eat This Book: Cooking with Global Fresh Flavors," Tyler launches his third cookbook titled "Tyler's Ultimate" in the fall of '06.
 
On the design front, Tyler's tabletop line that he developed in conjunction with Mikasa hit stores in the fall of '06 with an exclusive nationwide launch at Macy's. Tyler also has entered into a ground-breaking partnership with Applebee's to create signature dishes for its menus nationwide. 
 
Apart from his work with Applebee's, Tyler is planning on opening a namesake restaurant in New York.  Tyler says, "A restaurant is a game of nickels.  It takes 75 cents of the dollar to make a dollar, and the last 25 cents is split with five people.  It takes a lot of work ... and you need to be on top of your game."
