Career Courses

Johnson & Wales educates you to be a successful, complete culinary professional. This includes preparing you to professionally manage your own path to success with proven Career Management Courses — courses you won't find at other culinary schools that are an important part of your J&W curriculum. Beginning in your first year and continuing throughout your program of study, these courses provide the skills you'll need to take your career where you want it to go — ensuring that you'll graduate with an edge in the increasingly competitive culinary industry.

first year
In Introduction to Career Management, career coaches will help you explore the many career options and paths available with your degree. You’ll learn how to
• Use the Career Passport System and charts documenting required career skills and trends in the workplace, as tools for goal-setting
• Write a resumé, cover letter and reference sheet
• Interview and search for jobs, including web site searches like erecruiting.com accessible to students, alumni and employers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
• Prepare for and find hands-on learning experiences

second year
Career Planning assesses your progress in developing your Career Passport System and identifies what else is needed to reach your goals. You’ll learn the value of your co-op experience and how to use employer feedback on your performance to set new goals for self-improvement.

third or fourth year
Career Management Capstone helps you focus on completing your Career Passport System. You’ll learn about candidate recruitment and the tests often required in the selection process. You’ll also learn about financial responsibility, life planning and career management. You’ll ultimately develop job search tools (e.g. resumés, cover letters and portfolios) and strategies (e.g. attending On-Campus Recruiting and searching erecruiting.com) to help you throughout your career.
